A very old (and long) battle diary

Curses! I had been keeping this over at leadership10.com which is no longer around. Unfortunately I didn't have a recent backup - only this one I emailed myself to edit. Ah well. I assure you there were many more games both victories and defeats, however, the advent of the new codex seems like a good point to start over.

I never really kept track of my record before but I do like writing
up battle reports and have posted a number of them at
leadership10.com. I plan on moving them over to this site just for
completeness but the results will not be included in the record below.

opponent record
Black Templars 2-1-0
Blood Angels 1-1-0
Eldar 0-0-1
Necrons 1-0-0
Imperial Guard 1-0-0
Word Bearers 0-1-0

Mini battle reports:
I am gonna try and plug in what I can remember from these games and
then going forward just jot a note or two after the game. I'm gonna
try and keep these short - I have a tendency to get keyboard babble
when posting battle reports and they run on and on for pages. I will
still probably have some of those, but I will just link in the
extended battle report. The oldest are at the bottom of the list.

When possible I have gotten a copy of my opponent's list otherwise it
is just from memory - these lists will be very brief - someday I may
actually include links to other pages with the full army lists.
Hopefully I'll remember to snap a photo or two to add as well.

Pregame comments and thoughts:
Sergio and I haven't really just played a game in quite a while -
they have all been league games of late so this would be a nice
change of pace. He dug his Death Guard out for the occasion. I
hadn't played against them before with Iron Warriors so was curious
how it would go.

Game:
The first couple of turns went really well for me. I all but wiped
out his terminators from shooting and then popped one of his rhinos
with my daemon prince. The prince in turn got plasma'd and lost a
couple of wounds but wiped out the unit when it charged him. He then
went on to wipe out the termies in close combat and then consolidated
into a nearby wrecked building where he then blown away. I am not
exactly sure where the tipping point was but at the end of the game I
suddenly had nearly nothing left and he still had 3 or 4 scoring
units. And to top it all off I woke up the next day with the flu.
Guess papa Nurgle will not be denied. It was a fun game and pretty
fast for an 1850 pt game. It was nice to play against Sergio without
the pressure of a league or tournament environment.

Result:
Defeat

Postgame thoughts and unit citations (or curses):
Some people are just not meant to use a Daemon Prince and I am one of
them. I am really much better off keeping my HQ cheap. My possessed
performed pretty well in this game until they were shot to pieces.

--------------------------

10th Grand Company vs. Hammer of the Empire Imperial Guard

Mission:
Alpha Recon

Army lists - 1850+ (various territories give bonuses):

Iron Warriors:
Statured hard to kill prince, 2x6 man rhino squads with double plasma
and powerfist champ, 2x6 man lascannon squads (1 with infiltrate), 5
tankhunting termies with reaper ac, indirect defiler, indirect
basilisk, vindicator, close combat dread, 2x2 obliterators

IG:
HQ with lascannon, platoon with 2x lascannon, 2x AC, 1 HB, armored
fist, 2x indirect bassies, leman russ demolisher, 2x10 rough riders,
droppodding deathwatch with lightning claw captain.

Pregame comments and thoughts:
As a part of the rules for the league the players randomly generate
terrain and take turns placing it prior to the mission being
generated. Rob plays a fairly standard gunline with the welcome
addition of a couple of units of rough riders (see the army list for
more details). The point of this is that neither of us wanted much
terrain on the table so there were a couple of huge killing fields
with a building straight in the middle (I wanted somewhere to hide my
Prince, Tengri). When we generated an Alpha Recon he was basically
playing for a draw.

Game:
Rob really hurt himself in deployment by placing both of his
Basilisks in the same corner - I stacked the majority of the quick
elements of my army on that same side and advanced inside minimum
range. His first turn of shooting kinda worried me - he popped both
smoked rhinos and my dreadnought with his first 3 shots. Fortunately
the passengers survived largely unharmed and were able to hide behind
the vehicle and not take any further shooting. He did have a
surprise in the form of the 2 rough rider units as I advanced on his
bassies. Wow, they hit hard as my prince discovered as he was sent
back to Medrengard. Ultimately, though, it wasn't quite enough.
Supported by the vindicator I was able to get both rhino squads and
both oblits units into the IGs deployment zone at the end of the
game. Rob dropped his deathwatch into my deployment zone, took out
my defiler and then moved in and took out my bassie which exploded
with a vengeance and knocked them under scoring size. I tend to lose
a lot of vehicles but it seems like they will do a lot of damage as
they die. I chalk it up to pure bitterness and spite as befits the
Iron Warriors.

Result:
Victory

Postgame thoughts and unit citations (or curses):
The terminators advanced steadily and laid down some brutal firepower.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------

10th Grand Company vs. Black Metal Legion Word Bearers

Mission:
Omega Recon

Army lists - 1850+ (various territories give bonuses):

Iron Warriors:
Statured hard to kill prince, 2x6 man rhino squads with double plasma
and powerfist champ, 2x6 man lascannon squads (1 with infiltrate), 5
tankhunting termies with reaper ac, indirect defiler, indirect
basilisk, vindicator, close combat dread, 2x2 obliterators

Word Bearers:
Bike hard to kill icon prince, bloodthirster, infiltrating lasplas,
rhino lasplas with bloodthirster champ, infiltrating raptors, 2x5
flamers, 2x 6 daemonettes, 6 bloodletters, 2x10 plaguebearers

Pregame comments and thoughts:
This was to be my first game vs. a daemon bomb army and I was looking
forward to it. In deployment I spread myself pretty thin so a single
summoned unit wouldn't be able to tie up half my army. Matt won the
choice to go first and chose to take it.

Game:
There are some games where everything just goes right. All of your
dice rolls are on, your reserves show up where and when you want them
and all of your scatters are to your benefit. When the dice are hot
like that you are almost unstoppable. That was Matt's game in a
nutshell. Obviously the dark gods favored his sacrifices and the
obeisance he paid to them above mine. Ouch. Still, I stuck it out
as best I could and hit him with a couple of surprises. If anyone
has any tips on how to take down a bloodthirster, please let me know.

Result:
Defeat

Postgame thoughts and unit citations (or curses):
I ended the game with a defiler and a single obliterator on opposite
sides of the board. Despite the fact that I was almost tabled I
really felt like I had a chance through most of the game. His rolls
were just seriously out of control. Toward the end of the game he
was apologizing for how good they were. But them's the breaks, it's
a game with dice so there is some level of randomness and I like it.
It's what makes the stories fun and elevates a single model into a hero.

10th Grand Company vs. Blood Angels
Mission:
Gamma Seek and Destroy

Pregame comments and thoughts:
This was my rematch with Ryan after the narrow defeat that I suffered
last time I played him. He brought a slightly different list
forgoing all vehicles for an almost entirely infantry based army.

Game:
This was my rematch against Ryan. The table definitely favored me
and he brought an entirely foot based Blood Angel army and I had a
couple of pretty sweet kill zones. I got to go first and was able to
destroy one of his Tornado Land Speeders on Turn 1 before he had a
chance to move. I also killed his bike mounted Librarian with a
lucky drift. Turn 2 the defiler killed the second speeder with his
reaper autocannons. On turn 3 he fired an indirect shot that killed
one member the Blood Angel's large assault squad and pinned the unit
at the worst possible time (for him). I think this probably broke
his back because it allowed me to clear out most everything else that
he had. Not too shabby overall and I will probably keep using the
defiler - this was one of my first games with him. Incidentally,
Ryan gave me 2 of them and has long been lobbying for their inclusion.

Victory

10th Grand Company vs. Emerald Crusaders

Mission:
Alpha Secure and Control

Pregame comments and thoughts:
Game 3 of the Southern California Games Workshop League. I hadn't
played against Russ before but was told that he has been playing a 3
Land Raider Crusader list. I am interested in how this list is doing
because I had originally considered something like that for myself.
I considered making a more anti-tank list but in the end decided just
to keep playing my list from the earlier game since I tend to play
the same list for several games in a row with only minor tweaks.

Game:
Much to my surprise Russ showed up with a drop pod list. I hadn't
played against that either, so was very interested. The were all
Forgeworld so looked quite good. I was fortunate that this was his
first game with them. There were a few times that he hung his
special weapons and powerfists out at the end of a line and I moved
to where I only had line of sight to them so was able to snipe them.

There were a few pivotal moments in this game - the first is where he
charged a unit of mine in cover with his but rolled snake eyes for
movement. As I am writing this, it occurs to me that the dread
should have been destroyed at this point since it is a vehicle in
dangerous terrain but we forgot it at the time. In true Chaos
fashion I shot him in the back and blew him up (even with the
venerable reroll).

Next, I used an obliterator shooting plasma at a unit of assault
termies to get into Qarajin's charge range. He would have killed
them all but Russ made an invulnerable save and then power fisted the
lieutenant.

The other pivotal moment came on the last turn when his unit with the
Emperor's Champion tried to charge 2 scoring units with a unit made
up of the EC, a marshall and a single Marine. He rolled high enough
in the difficult terrain that he was able to get into base to base
with two guys and thus couldn't maintain coherency to charge my
obliterator who was able to secure a counter at the botton of the
turn. In retrospect, had he simply had the EC leave the unit he
could have charged the oblit and at least tied it up, preventing me
from getting the tie-breaking counter at the bottom of turn 6.

Result:
Victory

Postgame thoughts and unit citations (or curses):
This game was CLOSE. Were it not an all or nothing Alpha mission it
would have been a draw in Russ's favor by 35 points. It was a great
game and super tight the whole way through - just the way I like
'em! A game like this demands a rematch and there is one coming up
soon.

Dread Godag earned my ire this game by Fire Frenzying on turn 1 at
one of my own units (he did nothing to it). Turn 2 he Fire Frenzied
at a unit that dropped in near him and they consolidated into him.
Turn 3 he firefrenzied in combat which became blood frenzy. Turn 4
he fire frenzied at a drop pod. Turn 5 he behaved himself. Turn 6
he fire frenzied. It was INSANE.

Iron Warrior of the match would have to be Qorchi, the lonely
obliterator who won me the game through judicious plasma shots at
terminator squads, won a protracted close combat against a crusader
squad and then claimed an objective at the bottom of turn 6.

----------------------------
10th Grand Company vs. Ryan's Necrons

Mission:
Phase out the Necron (okay, I forget, but any game against Necrons
becomes that for me)

Pregame comments and thoughts:
Ryan hasn't played much 40k for a while and his Necrons are fully
painted so he wanted to play a game to see if he liked 40k or not.
No pressure here, if Ryan doesn't have fun he will never play the
game again...

Game:
I don't like Necrons. Let me just put that out there. I find that
overall they are a bit dull to play and to play against. Also, they
are slaves to the vagaries of chance - play against someone who is
having a hot day with his WBB rolls and he is nigh unbeatable, play
against someone who is having lousy WBBs and he is miserable and
frustrated. This was a fun game because I like playing against Ryan
and there were a couple of cool cinematic moments like when my
vindicator shell drifted onto my lt. and he made his invulnerable
save. We could just imagine him being catapulted by the explosion
into the combat. He was then overwhelmed and dragged down.

My shooting outranged his by a lot and I sent flanking units around
in a pretty standard pincer maneuver - this was my first game using
bikes, by the way. They hit a unit in cover and eventually ground it
down and then ran it down. Ryan had bad reserve rolls for one of his
monoliths and it didn't show up until turn 5 but by that point it was
all but over. His destroyers did a good job of killing a couple of
small units in close combat. His lack of dedicated anti-tank units
hurt him after I killed his heavy destroyers and deprived them of the
WBB rolls with a couple of rapid firing plasma guns.

Result:
Victory

10th Grand Company vs. Cruz Negra

Mission:
Gamma Recon

Pregame comments and thoughts:
Game 2 of the Southern California GW League. Recon is never going to
be easy for an army like the Iron Warriors. Fortunately my list has
a few mobile elements and deepstriking Obliterators are just what the
Chirumeks ordered.

Game:
Mutated Hull on the dread really helped out in this game. I locked
the Emperor's Champion's unit in combat with him and proceeded to
squash the champion and then over the next few turns take out the
entire squad. BT's only getting 2 attacks with their powerfist kinda
hurts them and then when they need a 5 just to glance it spells bad
news. When he finally finished with them he tore his way across the
battlefield ripping rhinos apart and generally causing havoc.

I also used the Black Templars special rules against them to great
effect in this game. I drew them into combat with the dread by
shooting the unit. I also tried to get another unit to charge
Qarajin and his Wolves but Hector rolled low so he ended up getting
the charge off. Qarajin still ripped him apart and then later in the
game I shot the terminators with a plasma rifle and forced them to
move towards Qarajin who charged in with his lightning claws and
finished the unit.

Hector, meanwhile, managed to destroy my vindicator and wipe out both
of my lascannon squads as well as one of my plasma squads and the
oblits. Our Land Raiders shot each other every turn, neither able to
do much to the other.

Towards the end game I sacrificed a unit in a gambit to pull one of
Hector's unit's into a fire lane to knock them under half. He bit
and I knocked them below scoring. The deep striking oblits caused
much havoc with long range sniping and back armor shots on his dread.

Result:
Solid Victory

Postgame thoughts and unit citations (or curses):
This was one of those games where everything went my way. It's hard
to fault much of what Hector did aside from leaving cover to shoot at
my bait unit.

Iron Warrior of the match is a toss up between Dread Godag and Qarajin.

10th Grand Company vs. Gabriel's Sword

Misson:
Gamma Seek and Destroy

Pregame comments and thoughts:
This was my first game of the 2006 Winter Season of the 40k Southern
California GW League. It was against Sergio's Eldar and my last game
against 3rd edition Eldar.

Game:
I thought I would be clever and take lots of infantry. Sergio was
more clever and took lots of starcannons... ouch. Basically, every
turn he shot at me I lost a unit. I made a couple of mistakes that I
remember such as moving my Basilisk into woods in order to take a
direct shot. It was my first game with the vindicator and I had no
idea what I was doing with it so it basically killed 3 rangers and
then died. I spent way too much of the game trying to take down the
falcons and failing. The only reason this game was a draw was
because I got lucky on a few things. First, Sergio's Striking
Scorpions missed a tank shock check and fell back and then failed to
rally so fell back again. Then on the last turn and immobilized a
falcon he had sitting on an objective which was a pretty massive
points swing - something like 500 points if memory serves (half for
the vehicle and depriving him of the points of the objective).

Result:
Draw

Postgame thoughts and unit citations (or curses):
I don't like winning (or in this case, not losing) games because of
sheer luck but I'll take it. Especially against Sergio. After this
game my wife asked how it went, I told her a draw and she made fun of
me. Come home in victory or not at all, apparently. Spoken like a
true daughter of Olympia.

The Havocs were the Iron Warriors of the match - it was their last
turn shooting that finally immobilized the Falcon.

First list with new dex

o, went back to look over the new codex again at my local store and took my Iron Wing list - those of you who have been here for a while may remember some of my older battle reports - this list is taken directly from one of those just to kind of compare. I have to say, I am pretty dang excited by the new codex, I may have to put my Black Templars back in the warp...

Hopefully this isn't violating IP - I kept all points off and it is really just an old dex new dex comparison.

List under old Codex

------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my 2000 pt Iron Wing list - a whopping 33 models!

Warsmith Hyun - General - Lt. in termie armor, mutation, spiky bits,
strength, power weapon, combi melta, bionics, mocu, furious assault
Hyun's Jebujin - 4 chosen termies, heavy flamer, combimelta,
combiflamer, chainfist, furious assault

Learned Bekh - Lt. in termie armor, mutation, spiky bits, gift of
chaos, talisman, focus, combi melta
Bekh's Jebujin - 4 chosen termies, combi melta, 2 power fists, chain
fist, reaper autocannon

Chingijin - 6 Chosen, mocu, tank hunters, 2 reaper autocannons

Kiritugh - dreadnought, autocannon, smoke, armor, mutated hull

Temujin - dreadnought, plasma cannon, smoke, armor, mutated hull

Qorchi - 2 oblits

Jagun - 2 oblits

Naranqique - land raider, smoke launchers

Qarajin's Wolves - 5 csm, mocu
Qulan's Hawks - 5 csm, mocu
=
2000 pts, 33 models, 10 scoring units

------------------------------------------------------------------

Iron Wing list under new Codex

Warsmith Hyun - General - Terminator Lord, Power Fist, Combimelta, Personal Icon

Learned Bekh - Sorceror - Terminator Armor, Mark of Slaanesh, Lash of Submission, Combimelta, Personal Icon

Hyun's Jebujin - 4 Terminators - CombiMelta, 2 Powerfists, Chainfist, Reaper AC

Bekh's Jebujin - 4 Terminators - Heavy Flamer, combimelta, Combiflamer, Chainfist

Chingijin - 10 Terminators - 2 Powerfists, Combimelta, 2 Reaper AC

Qorchi - 2 Obliterators

Jagun - 2 Obliterators

Naranqique - Land Raider, Daemonic Possession

Qarajin's Wolves - 5 csm, Icon of Chaos Glory
Qulan's Wolves - 5 csm, Icon of Chaos Glory
=
1760, 35 models, 8 scoring units

You may notice that this list doesn't include the dreads - their swap to elites and the inability to take retinues (as far as I saw) messed with the force org - good riddance I say, they never lived up to potential - This list also has more termies and a whopping big 10 man unit!

So, what to do with the extra points... I know, I will use something I never had the choice of doing before - take daemons! Though I must admit I was tempted to take another land raider and make both of them dedicated transports for the escorts... I may yet do that, actually (it makes the list exactly 2000pts), but for now I am excited at the prospects of daemons!

I have the points for 18 daemons and am not sure whether to use them as 2 units of 9 or 3 units of 6 - for starters I will go with 3 units of 6 for the extra scoring units. If they end up being too fragile I will adjust accordingly. That leaves me 6 points to get an extra combi weapon or something.

And for those of you with whom fluff is important (such as myself) I will add that I don't use "Lash of Submission" I use "False Orders" to mislead enemy units.

Iron Within!

Time flows strangely in the warp

I have been playing Black Templars and Witch Hunters a lot lately, though with the new Chaos Codex looming I have decided that I will likely return to the Eye and sally forth in search of vengeance.

Watch this space for updates.
